What could be the worst storm to hit the western North Carolina region in recorded history, Helene has been absolutely devastating to so many people and communities. My family was fortunate, among so many who where not so lucky. This is what I witnessed of the storm the day it hit. We lost power shortly after 8am on the 28th, and did not get power back until a little more than a week later. A giant shagbark hickory tree came down, and a top half of a sugar maple tree came down, neither one hitting anything but the ground. Our only loss was the food in our refrigerator and freezers, which is absolutely nothing in comparison to the devastating loss of so many others. Our friends and neighbors lost their driveway, and our road (with only one way in and one way out) was washed away where the heavy waters flowed down Rich Mountain / Tater Hill.
