• structural mechanics Dr Jawed Qureshi explains types of beams, types of loading applied to these beams, support conditions and reactions. 1. Beam: Think of a beam like a long, strong stick. Beams are used in buildings and structures to hold things up, like floors and roofs. They're like the bones that make a building or bridge strong. 2. Types of Beams: There are different types of beams. Some are straight like a log, some are shaped like the letter "I", and others are like a rectangle. These different shapes are used for different jobs, like supporting heavy stuff or spanning long distances. 3. Supports: Imagine you're holding one end of a stick and your friend is holding the other end. Your hands are like supports for the stick. In the world of beams, there are different ways to support them. Some beams are supported at both ends, like a diving board, while others might be supported only at one end, like a shelf on a wall. 4. Reactions: When you put weight or push on a beam, it reacts in certain ways. It can either bend or stay still. The reactions are like how your stick would bend or stay straight when you push or put things on it. These reactions are really important to make sure everything stays safe and doesn't break. So, beams are like strong sticks that hold up buildings and bridges. They come in different shapes, can be supported in various ways, and react to forces by bending or staying still. Understanding all of this helps engineers build safe and sturdy structures.
