https://neurologyofcannabis.com Can you smell that smell? Why does cannabis smell? Well, I’m going to answer that interesting question today. Hi. I’m Dr. Dan Stein, owner, Neurology of Cannabis and board-certified neurologist. Cannabis has a very strong odor as many of you know. But it’s not because of the THC content or CBD. It’s because of what are called terpenes. Terpenes are aromatic molecules that are released either when vaporized or combusted when patients smoke or vaporize cannabis. These terpene molecules are the same molecules that are in fruits for example. Limonene, one of the terpenes in cannabis that give the plant its citrusy aroma is the same molecule that is found in lemons or oranges. These aromatic molecules provide not only an interesting aroma but also a biological effect. That’s right. The terpenes, the molecules that provide the aroma to cannabis can also have a biological effect. In fact, cannabis varieties that provide different effects do that because of what’s called the “terpene profile” or fingerprint of the cannabis variety. It has got nothing to do with the THC and CBD when it comes to the more subtle effects. So even though THC and CBD, the main cannabinoid molecules, provide very potent effects such as relaxation and pain relief and anti-anxiety effects, analgesic effects, it’s the terpenes, the other molecules, the aromatic molecules that provide the more subtle benefits like reducing depression or promoting high energy or relaxation for example. We have other interesting information about cannabis terpenes and I can go on and on. But for now, let me just say that we are here to answer your questions.
