After the ovum is released into the fallopian tube through the process known as ovulation, it travels down the uterus. The uterus is a pair-shaped structure with a thick muscle wall. The lowest part of the uterus is called the cervix, which opens into the vagina. The vagina, a muscular tubular tract, leads from the uterus to the exterior of the body. The ovaries secrete estrogen, a hormone which releases into the bloodstream and helps in developing secondary sexual characteristics in the female body.
