A suspected LPG cylinder explosion has taken the life of an 8 year old boy, left at least 9 others injured, and damaged over a dozen houses. What should have been a normal day began with tragedy, leaving behind destruction, grief, and urgent questions about safety in our homes. Let’s take you through what happened. BODY This incident took place on Friday morning around 7:45 to 8 a.m. in Chinnaiyapalya, Wilson Garden, a thickly populated neighbourhood of Bengaluru. The suspected leak of cooking gas from a cylinder in the house of a woman named Kasturi led to a massive blast. The impact was so strong that the walls and roofs of several houses collapsed. Within minutes, chaos and panic spread across the locality as people rushed out in fear. Sadly, the blast claimed the life of little Mubarak, just 8 years old, who was sleeping in his house next door when the walls crashed on him. His father had stepped out for prayers, his mother was outside washing clothes, and his sister survived with injuries. Nine others, including children and elderly residents, were rushed to hospitals with severe burns, fractures, and head injuries. Some are still in critical condition at Victoria and Sanjay Gandhi hospitals. The explosion flattened at least two houses completely and left more than 13 houses damaged. Debris scattered across the street, leaving nearly 60 people homeless. For daily wage earners and small shopkeepers in the area, this means not just losing a roof over their heads, but also their livelihoods. Fire and emergency services reached the spot within minutes after receiving a distress call. Forensic experts and bomb squads also examined the site, though early reports suggest it was a gas leak-triggered blast. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, along with Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar and Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy, visited the site. The Chief Minister announced rupees 5 lakh compensation for Mubarak’s family, free treatment for all the injured, and promised that the government will rebuild the damaged homes. BBMP has arranged temporary shelters for the displaced families at Jain Bhavan. Residents of Wilson Garden are still in shock. Many described the explosion as deafening the kind that rattled doors and windows even a kilometer away. Families now face the pain of losing loved ones and the fear of returning to the same locality where tragedy struck. For children and parents alike, the memory of that morning will remain etched forever. This tragic event is a painful reminder of how dangerous gas leaks can be in densely packed neighbourhoods. Experts say that regular checks of LPG connections, timely replacement of regulators and tubes, and immediate reporting of any unusual smell can save lives. Safety awareness, especially in working-class communities where houses are close together, becomes crucial to avoid such accidents. OUTRO As the city mourns the loss of young Mubarak and prays for the recovery of the injured, this incident also teaches us a vital lesson safety in our homes can never be taken lightly. A single leak, a single spark, can change lives forever. Our thoughts are with the families in Wilson Garden who have lost their homes and loved ones. May the government’s promises of support bring them some relief in this dark time. This is Varsha Venugopal, reporting on the Wilson Garden tragedy in Bengaluru.
