Take 117 is essentially the “end-point master tape” of The Beatles’ “Sexy Sadie” as it emerged from the late-stage rebuild of the 1968 White Album sessions. It was created through a chain of tape reductions (bounce-downs) meant to free up tracks for further overdubs, and it became the source used for the key mono and stereo mixes. The pivotal work leading to Take 117 took place on 21 August 1968 at Abbey Road (Studio Two) during a long overnight session. Across the reduction chain (often summarized as Take 107 → 112 → 113–115 → 116 → 117), performances and overdubs were progressively consolidated. One crucial step is typically described as the moment when the backing vocals were combined with the piano-and-guitar track, after which Paul overdubbed the bass onto Take 117, effectively completing the recording. From Take 117, the team attempted multiple mono mixes, including RM1–RM5. Notably, RM5 runs about 39 seconds longer than the released master because it preserves an extra instrumental section near the end that was later edited out for the White Album version. In this video, I’m presenting that longer RM5 (+39s) in a new form: I remixed it in stereo, then cleaned it up and remastered it for a clearer, more immersive listen.
