Teammates and defenders Addison Hall, a junior, and sophomore Maya Jolic of No. 7 seed Mt. Carmel High in California contributed to the Sun Devils outlasting No. 4 San Marcos High of California by a 5-4 margin on penalty kicks after the teams played through regulation and overtime to a 0-0 girls soccer result in the CIF-San Diego Section Open Division championship at Chick Embrey Field at Wilson Stadium on the campus of Escondido High. Hall and Jolic helped Mt. Carmel secure a shutout against San Marcos after surrendering six goals against the Knights in a pair of Palomar League showdowns during the regular season. Hall and Jolic also converted their penalty kicks for the Sun Devils, who also prevailed in a shootout in the semifinals at No. 6 Carlsbad following another 0-0 outcome through regulation and overtime. Mt. Carmel won its first section title since capturing the Division 2 crown in 2020.
