Making a Japanese shikibuton by hand. Japanese futons allow for a comfortable way to sleep, particularly on your back. This really only took me about 2 days of actual work, from design/planning to completion. It's relatively low cost. Most materials can be bought at Jo-ann or Michael's (or used goods), except the cotton batting which I recommend finding online. The natural cotton has a very nice, calming scent, that reminds me of black pepper. If you use cotton fabric (esp. used) and natural cotton bedding, you are producing something that will eventually biodegrade with minimal harm to the earth. It also feels great. I was inspired by and used this video to understand the process. • 敷布団の作り方 Some things to note: 1. I used 5 yards of raw batting cotton and a thin piece of cotton batting and it was barely enough.. I would recommend using between 6 yards for a firm feel to even 10 yards if you want a softer surface. 2. Cover with a sheet that you can wash regularly. Maybe hang up to dry in the sun occasionally.
