In this episode of unsobered's "Where to Drink", we take you deep into South Mumbai to explore some of the most iconic budget-friendly bars and local restaurants that reflect Mumbai’s rich cultural heritage through food and drink. From historic bars near CST (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus) to street-style snacks and legendary dive bars, this guide is your perfect map to where to eat and drink in Mumbai on a budget. We’re joined by Tejaswi Dev Chaudhary as we explore 3 iconic spots: 1. Vithhal Family Restaurant and Bar – Even older than Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, this establishment was started by Vithal Khadawala in 1875. He began as a hawker selling bhelpuri under a tree opposite the New Empire Theatre—nearly 150 years ago! Today, this spot is frequently visited by college students and businesspeople alike. The ambiance was incredibly welcoming, with staff and workers who have been there for 25-30 years. Their hospitality is so effortless that they make you feel comfortable instantly. As for food and drinks, we ordered beer for everyone, and the snack list was extensive: cucumber, paneer pakoda, cheese pakoda, moong bhaji, salted peanuts, and papad, all complemented by various green, red, and garlic chutneys. Not only that, but we were also treated to their iconic bhelpuri and sev puri, and, oh man, what an experience! We also had the chance to speak with members of the Vithal family, who explained how the restaurant has remained iconic for 150 years. We give Vithhal Family Restaurant and Bar a 10 out of 10 overall and highly recommend it to anyone new to the city or just visiting; you must experience this place at least once. 2. Shri Punjab Sindh Family Restaurant and Bar – this bar offered a delightful contrast to our previous stop. It presented a nice cozy ambiance, creating an immediate sense of comfort. The friendly staff contributed significantly to the positive atmosphere, making us feel welcome and at ease. We particularly enjoyed sampling Bombay's iconic London beer, alongside Corona, which paired perfectly with the unexpected bonus of complimentary snacks. This thoughtful gesture of free snacks truly enhanced our experience and left us with a feeling of genuine satisfaction. 3. New Majestic Restaurant & Bar – Our final (and brief) stop, but every story needs a twist. Unfortunately, we were asked to leave, so we headed to McDonald's instead. Also featuring views of the majestic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CST station) and hidden gems in Fort, Mumbai, this episode proves that food and drink are a powerful expression of cultural identity.
