Flying the Raptor, Eagle and Gripen before the Storm, 24 January 2026

With a big storm clearly on its way—but not quite here yet—we decided to take advantage of the small window and go flying. We knew going in that the difficulty level would be higher than usual, with challenging and unpredictable conditions, but with no guarantee of when we’d get another chance to fly, it felt like a now-or-never kind of decision. Given the winds, we chose aircraft that could better handle rougher air and higher wing loading. The lineup included two 90mm EDFs: the Freewing F-22A Raptor (01) and the upgraded Freewing F-15C Eagle. The Eagle had recently received a power system upgrade, with the original 3668-1960kv EDF replaced by a metal 4068-1750kv unit, giving it more robustness and confidence for windy conditions. When we first arrived at the field, it was completely empty, adding to the sense that we were flying on borrowed time before the weather turned. Not long after, Pilot Mark showed up and put on an impressive show with his Freewing JAS39 Gripen 80mm. Watching the Gripen carve through the sky in the challenging conditions was a reminder of both the capability of the aircraft and the skill required to fly well when the weather isn’t cooperating. All in all, it was a high-stakes flying session—short on certainty, heavy on wind, but absolutely worth it.
