Flourishing native tribes, explorers, fur trappers, traders and settlers: Washington State's history adds intriguing events and characters to America's story, as we celebrate our nation's 250th birthday! Old Fort Nisqually was the first permanent European settlement in Puget Sound, founded in 1833 by renowned British outfit, the Hudson's Bay Company. Rather than serving as a military fort, Fort Nisqually was a peaceful center of global trade, prospering with local indigenous peoples, British subjects, Americans settlers and other nationalities. Today, Fort Nisqually Living History Museum is a Pacific Northwest treasure. It is home to the only remaining structures built by the Hudson Bay Company in North America as well as the oldest buildings of any kind in Washington State. Get a glimpse into Pacific Northwest life in the1850's in this video, courtesy of the fort's authentically attired "historical interpreters" and a local scholar from the Puyallup Tribe of Indians. Produced by KBTC TV, in Tacoma, Washington and North Woods Productions. View more history and cultural videos at KBTC.org.
