Towa and the Guardians of the Sacred Tree is a really unexpected surprise this year. I love it when I get so into a game that I lose the whole concept of time and that’s exactly what happened with Towa. I sit down to play for a short bit and I look up and I’ve played all day. I already had high hopes after my preview, but now that I’ve spent time with the full game and put in a ton more time, I can confidently say: this isn’t just a game I liked. It’s a game that feels like it was built for me, a fan of JRPGs that’s always been interested in roguelites but hasn’t been able to really get into them before. Towa has story, character depth, a phenomenal soundtrack done by the Final Fantasy Tactics composer, and an art style that I loved more and more as I spent more time with it.
