Mauritius has undergone a transformational urban planning development and changed topography for a decade now. Early planning was focused on sugar production and colonial structures. The shift came throughout the late 20th century with a shift to managing rapid urbanization, population growth and land use changes focusing on sustainable development. Urban planning continued to pave the way with the challenges of managing a dense and growing population, with high density concentrated in a few urban areas. The 21st century has seen the emergence of new planning concepts like "smart cities," built on former sugar cane land and integrating modern infrastructure, architecture, designs with amenities based on Sustainable living concepts like Moka Smart City developments. Urbanization began to be recognized as occurring outside of legally defined boundaries, leading to a need to redefine and acknowledge "rural" areas that were functionally becoming urban. The Metro Railway track has been implemented to connect the Capital City of Mauritius Port Louis to the major towns of the island namely Beau Bassin, Rose Hill, Quatre Bornes, Vacoas, Phoenix and Curepipe changing the topography of urban areas. Road infrastructure with a well connected road networks have also changed the way transportation is accessible to rural areas. The island has undergone a transformational change for over a decade now with modern infrastructure, Smart Cities, better road networks, access to rural areas via motorways and with a modern airport for air access apart from the port which needs more development to accommodate more vessels and ships. The new Mauritius is case study of urbanization development with several sustainable development goals initiatives taken into account while climate change and coastal erosions still are showing up in drastic ways for which several measures to combat them have been brought up by the government on an ongoing planning process to reduce the negative impacts.
