Colorectal is the 3rd most common form of cancer in the US. Although the colonoscopy is the gold standard for a colon cancer screening, the human eye can only do so much. “It can be hard to find, it can be flat, it can be small, it can be hidden behind folds,” said Dr. Ashwani Sethi. “In colonoscopies, we miss 20% of adenomas of polyps. And if we can detect more polyps, then we can decrease the rate of colon cancer even further.” Now Lee Health doctors like Dr. Sethi have a helping hand thanks to a new technology called GI Genius. “It's a second set of eyes and it works in real time as you're doing the colonoscopy. It flashes these green square boxes where we suspect a polyp is there, and it increases the adenoma detection rate.” GI Genius uses advanced visualization and AI software to highlight precancerous polyps in real-time. “It has really been a game changer for us because I've been using it ever since I was introduced by Lee in all its facilities. And we've been finding, you know, that it really helps us. It gives a zing of the green square, and we look at it, and I've discovered a few polyps, which I probably would not have discovered, which are small and flat,” said Dr. Sethi. If colon cancer is caught early or in the polyp stage, it’s totally curable. A colon cancer screening is recommended every 10 years once you turn 45.
