Community forestry in Nepal has long been hailed as a global success story—transforming degraded lands into thriving forests, enhancing rural livelihoods, and reshaping local governance. But today, this once dynamic movement is facing stagnation amid shifting socio economic realities, evolving forest management practices, and contested visions for what community forests should deliver in the 21st century. In this thought provoking episode, host Dr. Prakash Kumar Paudel, conservation biologist and policy researcher, sits down with Bijyandra Basnyat, a seasoned expert in forest governance with over two decades of experience and influential publications in Nepal’s forestry sector, to critically examine: 1. The evolution of community forestry in Nepal—how it began and what it has achieved 2. Its multiple impacts on livelihoods, biodiversity, social development, and local governance 3. Why community forestry is currently stagnant, despite its historic successes 4. The debate around community forests’ role—should they prioritize timber production, or focus on ecological and social values? 5. Emerging concerns that timber centric approaches may undermine forest ecology and Nepal’s unique environmental sensitivities 6. The knowledge gap in understanding Nepal’s forests—where much of our training still relies on Indian and British textbooks, not Nepali ecosystems 7. How policy, practice, and tradition converge (or collide) in shaping the future of forests If you care about forest governance, sustainable livelihoods, biodiversity conservation, ecological knowledge, or Nepal’s environmental future, this episode offers grounded insights, frank debate, and critical reflections on where community forestry must go next. 00:00 Intro 01:00 Community Forestry Revisited 04:06 Impacts: Society, Economy & Conservation 10:01 How Community Forestry Evolved 14:24 The Timber Debate 44:18 Can Community Forests Survive Today? 51:01 Ecology vs. Timber — What Comes First? 1:04:40 The Needed Paradigm Shift 1:21:40 Final Summary About Guest Bijyandra Basnyat is a Researcher and Development Professional.
