National Health Insurance - Yes or no? That’s the topic of this special edition of Democracy Unplugged moderated by Penuel The Black Pen. Free Market Foundation’s Mike Settas, Democratic Alliance’s Michéle Clarke and Dr Confidence Moloko, who has worked within the ANC, dive into this topic to look at the goals and principles of NHI, its implementation and challenges, public perception and its future. Dr Esthras Tlou Confidence Moloko: He has has a very distinguished CV - an alumnis of the Medical University of Southern Africa (MEDUNSA - he has a wealth of experience in both the public and private health sector). He’s worked at all levels of the public sector in four of South Africa's provinces and in the Ministry of Health overseeing all provincial departments of health. He's been a coordinator of the ANC NEC Subcommittee on Education, Health, Science and Technology, extensively involved in policy, planning, monitoring and evaluation of South Africa's ANC Education, Health, Science, Technology and Innovation Sectors. This and much much more – Dr Moloko brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to this panel. Michéle Clarke: MP spokesperson on health for the DA. Has served as a ward councillor for Bedfordview for three terms. Served in Community Safety and Finance. In 2014, she went to the GP Legislature served for 5 years on community safety. Elected to parliament in 2019. Served on Public Administration at the department of public enterprise and the last two years on the health committee as the spokesperson. She worked for local government for 12 years and worked in the Health sector for 11 years. Currently finalising her law degree. She’s also a paralegal in terms of profession. Mike Settas: He is currently chairman of the Free Market Foundation’s Health Policy Unit, a think-tank whose objectives are to expand public knowledge on sound healthcare policies and initiatives. Michael has worked across multiples roles within the healthcare sector since 1991, from consulting to medical schemes on risk management, to managing health insurers and undertaking investigations on behalf of the industry regulator. He has delivered numerous talks and written extensively on sustainable health financing, the required reforms to existing private sector regulations as well as government’s contentious National Health Insurance.
