In the northwoods of Minnesota lies one of the most unique operations in the country. Canadian National’s Chicago to Winnipeg mainline runs right through the iron range, along the rails of the former Duluth, Missabe, and Iron Range Railway. Alongside CN’s “core” trains run trains loaded with taconite and limestone, pulled behind iconic EMD veterans, like rebuilt SD40-2s and former Southern Pacific tunnel motors. We’ll show you the full variety of this region, as we start with part 1 in Duluth and up Proctor Hill. See the tracks right next to Lake Superior, along with BNSF, CP, and more. Then, we climb the famous 2% grade of Proctor Hill, before showing you scenes in Proctor. In part 2, we begin in Proctor and follow the Missabe Sub northbound to Shelton Junction. See taconite, limestone, and core trains together on this easily-accessible line. We finish up at the busy north end, where the t-bird shuttle trains run on the double track. In part 3 we follow the trains to Two Harbors, beginning at Minntac Mine, then hanging a left at Iron Junction, where we follow the secluded Iron Range Sub down to Two Harbors. During our filming, the beloved EMD-series locomotives on this line were changed out, and former Chicago Northwestern C40-8s took over.
