The sparkling gourami (Trichopsis pumila) is sometimes confused with the croaking gourami (Trichopsis vittata). The sparkling gourami is smaller, in fact, it is the smallest species of gourami and is sometimes also known as the Pygmy Gourami. Both species are known for making a croaking sound using their pectoral fins. Both the males and the females can make this noise, but the males are a bit louder than the females. Other popular gouramis include the Dwarf Gourami, the Honey Gourami, and the Pearl Gourami. All are amazing fish that prefer calm water and lots of live plants in their tanks. All gouramis are anabantids, which means they can breathe air from above the surface of the water, just like betta fish.
