The Ikarus 293 Story: The Record-Breaking Double-Bendy Bus! [Hungarian Bus History]

Ikarus was well-known for its manufacture of articulated buses. But, in 1988, they built a prototype bus that was longer than any other bus at that time. It consisted to two articulated joints and three body sections, clocking in at 22.68 metres, or nearly 75' long. It was assembled from parts of two buses of the 280 series. Apart from its size, it was quite conventional for its time. The bus was tested, but drivers did not like it. Eventually, it was sold to the Tehran Bus Company, which actually drove it all the way from Budapest to Tehran, as it could not fit on any exisiting railway car!! It served in Iran until 2009, and seemingly disappeared after that. But, it was discovered that it still exists, and will be a part of a new transport museum in Iran. And that's not the end of the 293 story. In 2022, a replica of the Ikarus 293 was completed, built from two existing 280 series buses, just like the original. The bus will be used strictly as a traveling exhibit, but the fact that this one-off prototype was recreated, is simply amazing. See and hear the story of the Ikarus 293 double-articulated bus!!
