Episode 3 Microdermabrasion Machine Pump Size Matters

When you're shopping for a microdermabrasion device, you'll find them in many shapes and sizes, and it's tempting to purchase the smallest unit possible, to minimize the impact on your work space. You know, you all have limited counter space, limited floor space, and it makes sense that you might want to get the smallest unit, so you can carry it around. But the size of the device can tell you a lot about the performance you can expect from the unit. Usually, microdermabrasion devices are built as small as possible, to accommodate the pump that is the heart of the device. You know, it's the pump that does the work, by creating the vacuum that carries the crystals in the stream of air across the skin. And just for a measurement of this vacuum level, most microdermabraders come with an intensity or a vacuum meter on them that's measured from zero to 30. And the increments there are what's called inches of mercury. And not to get too technical, that really means is how high the pump will draw a one-inch column of mercury up in a tube. So the maximum you're gonna see in any of these machines is about 30 inches of mercury. Mercury is very heavy. So when turned all the way up, most microdermabrader devices will get to 27 inches of mercury eventually. But a secret that most microdermabraders manufacturers don't tell you is that the real measure of performance is how quickly they get to this vacuum rate. And that tells you how much air and crystal flow, because you know, it's the air that pulls the crystals through the device. How much air the device will move at any vacuum level. So small cases usually mean small pumps. Bigger pumps move more air, more crystals, at any given vacuum reading. So that results in more consistency of results, because you get consistent crystal flow. What's interesting is you get more control at lower levels, as well. So you can have lower vacuum but move more air, so that you can work on some of those more sensitive areas of the body, like closer to the eyes and other mucus membranes. But the more power also allows you to do more aggressive procedures, such as scar mediation, cellulite reduction, and those types. Sorry, I don't mean to jump in. Real quick, so I guess it's really helping in two [inaudible 00:05:31], so you can perform the more aggressive procedures or the protocols that require, ultimately, more flow through the machine. But you can also dial it back and deal with the sensitive areas of the body or the skin and give you more treatment control. Is that the way to look at it? Exactly right. So again, it's counterintuitive that a larger pump would let you work on more sensitive areas of the body. But that's exactly how that works. Terrific. Okay. So a couple other positive things about a larger pump is that they're gonna last longer, because they're not running at full capacity. And because they're not winding out as fast as they can go, they're generally quieter, as well. Got it.
