https://www.goldenroadarts.org/art-re... – Master printmaker April Vollmer joins us at Golden Road Arts to demonstrate her Japanese water-based woodblock (mokuhanga) process with a magnificent multi-tone print of a kingfisher, as well as a glimpse into her journey and inspiration as an artist. April serves on the advisory board of the International Mokuhanga Association (IMA) and is passionate about cultural exchange through the practice of mokuhanga. The IMA holds triennial conventions in Japan to foster a community of mokuhanga artists and promote collaboration all across the globe. All levels of artists are welcome, from hobbyist to professional. April along with her many peers in the IMA seek to preserve the traditional craft of mokuhanga as well as encourage innovation and new ideas. For more information about the IMA, visit mokuhanga.org. Initially learning the process of mokuhanga in 1995, April sought to create more accessible information of this technique for other artists outside of Japan and wrote her book, Japanese Woodblock Print Workshop, in 2015. This book provides rich information about the different components of mokuhanga – such as ink, paper and tools – as well as the creative potential of this medium. She features over 50 artists' mokuhanga as well as her own work, giving readers a wide range of examples of the infinite possibilities of Japanese woodblock.
