Dipygus is a rare congenital anomaly where the body axis partially duplicates, usually resulting in two pelvises, extra legs, or even partial duplication of the lower abdomen. The term comes from Greek: di- (two) and pyge (rump/buttocks). Characteristics Duplication Pattern Most often, the duplication begins at or below the pelvis. Some individuals have four legs, but only two are functional. Extra genitalia, anus, or lower abdominal structures may also be duplicated. Associated Anomalies Malformations in the spine (spina bifida, bifid vertebrae). Gastrointestinal duplication (double colon or rectum). Urogenital duplication (two urinary tracts, two sets of reproductive organs). Embryological Cause Believed to arise from incomplete twinning or abnormal embryonic splitting of the caudal (tail-end) region. Some cases may involve a conjoined twin that only partially developed.
