Pokemon Heart and Soul - Johto Boss Battles (v1.1.6)

Heart and Soul is an Emerald hack that recreates the Johto region in a Gen 3 style. This video compiles all the boss battles that take place during the Johto campaign. Kanto and other postgame fights will be contained in subsequent videos. Played this because I saw it getting a lot of praise recently and I was down to replay Johto. This hack is very reminiscent to me of how back in the day before HGSS came out there were a ton of hacks that were remaking Johto in Gen 3. This absolutely feels like a modern take on that, capturing basically all the important stuff from the Johto games but otherwise feeling very faithful to the vanilla Gen 3 engine in terms of things like available moves, Pokémon learnsets, etc. Sometimes I think this is actively to the hack's detriment - if the random Larvitar that appears after the Rocket arc seems weird, that's because it was unplanned. The original 6th member was Weavile, until I realized after catching Sneasel that this mon apparently does not learn a physical ice move in this game bar an inaccessible Ice Punch tutor, and I last second pivoted to the Lv2 Larvitar in my box from Dark Cave. There's some other annoying stuff like a lot of the good moves (Ice Beam and that tier of move) being Game Corner exclusive still, so you either accept bad sets or you get them pretty early on (I had 10 bucks by the time I got to the E4 from buying all four special TMs early on in the game and then buying 6 nature mints lmao). Physical STAB for some types also seems kind of dire but ig that's just old Pokémon games for you. This isn't to say that there aren't also a lot of QoL things included. The aforementioned nature mints are there post 4 badges, not needing to teach HMs, and a very wide range of game customization options, allowing for you to modify various aspects of the difficulty as well as other things like shiny rate. A lot of annoying day of the week based stuff is changed as well (the week siblings, Lapras, etc seem to always be present). Also, aside from QoL features, the game is also just very visually appealing! Gen 3 always looks great, and the game has a lot of nice touches on top of that like the overworld mons and effects on the following mons (like the Cyndaquil line's fires glowing at night). Overall, while this isn't my favorite Johto remake/enhancement, I'd definitely say it's worth playing if you're looking for a pretty vanilla-feeling Johto run in a hack you haven't played before. As for the battles, I personally ran with modern battle settings (PSS, fairy type, etc). I let my mons gain EVs (though I didn't do targeted training), and set enemies to have EVs scale up (have no idea what this actually means lmao) along with max IVs. I also did my normal rules from all games of set mode + no items in battle. I also played with normal level caps (next leader's ace level) but in general I wasn't hitting the cap or only did so right before the gym fight most of the time, playing with only the base 1.0x exp multiplier. Overall the difficulty felt mostly slightly just above vanilla, with most fights not being too bad Notable fights are Azalea Silver (not hard but for me specifically my team was terrible against his and I needed to use some guest mons to not be super RNG-reliant), as well as a handful of fights like Whitney, Morty, Koga, Karen that can be a bit annoying depending on RNG you get. The game does offer a bunch of Chesto Berries if you want to plan for sleep but stuff like evasion spam is always annoying and is kind of emblematic of vanilla/close to vanilla difficulty lmao. 0:00 Silver (Cherrygrove) 1:03 Falkner 3:01 Proton (Slowpoke Well) 5:00 Bugsy 7:05 Silver (Azalea) 9:32 Whitney 15:23 Silver (Burned Tower) 19:23 Morty 24:55 Eusine 29:11 Chuck 32:27 Jasmine 36:26 Petrel (Mahogany) 39:26 Ariana and Grunt 42:19 Pryce 46:16 Petrel (Radio Tower) 48:49 Silver (Underground) 51:43 Proton (Radio Tower) 53:58 Ariana (Radio Tower) 56:19 Archer 1:00:12 Clair 1:04:15 Kimono Girls 1:09:46 Silver (Victory Road) 1:14:36 Will 1:16:55 Koga 1:18:50 Bruno 1:20:48 Karen 1:27:27 Lance https://www.pokecommunity.com/threads...
