With his hand cut and crushed in an powerful industrial machine, Larry Welk was trapped for over an hour. Rescuers managed to free him, but challenges to save his hand were still ahead. He was rushed to MedStar Union Memorial Hospital's Curtis National Hand Center in Baltimore, Maryland. He underwent advanced hand reconstructive surgery, performed by Dr. James Higgins. His fingers were saved with microsurgical techniques, and his fractures, tendon and nerve injuries were all treated. After several staged reconstructive operations, his final procedure required an innovative technique pioneered at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital. Dr. Higgins used a segment of bone from Mr. Welk's knee, and transferred it into his hand, with the blood vessels necessary to keep it alive. This enabled him to rapidly heal his injury and provided his hand the stability and pain-free motion needed for a strong grip and return of function.
