Netflix has just come out with a horrifying tale of a marriage that ended in the brutal death of Jason Corbett and the conviction and later release of his wife Molly Mortens and her father Thomas Martens. Three years later they moved to North Carolina and got married. The following two years seems to have the family flourishing, the children adjusting well and considering Molly to be their mother. But, in 2013 and 2014, Molly sought legal counsel concerning her ability to retain parental rights in a divorce due to her not having been allowed to adopt the children and the children still being Irish citizens. Then, Jsaon Corbett was bludgeoned to death in his home. Molly and her father both claimed it was self-defense, that Jason was choking Moll and both responded with a baseball bat and a brick to get him off of her and stop the threat. The jury didn't buy the claim, and they were found guilty of second-degree murder in 2017. The children returned to Ireland in the care of their aunt and uncle. The verdict was overturned and Molly and Tom pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in 2023. In 2024, they were released from prison. So, what happened to the Corbetts? What is the psychology behind the individuals? What were the dynamics of the marriage? What happened to the children during the marriage, the investigation, and the trials? What part did Molly and relatives of both sides play in coaching and influencing the children in their testimony? And how did their own testimony affect the outcomes of the case and custody of the children? As a profiler, I find this a very troubling and sad case and the children bore the brunt of it. I believe there is more to learn from this case than what was brought up in the documentary and I hope you find it interesting!
