Stark Brothers (www.starkbros.com) has a developed a new fig tree, Chicago Hardy Fig, that is supposed to be hardy to even colder areas that other varieties. So, we're trying it out! Once figs start producing each year they will produce for the remainder of the season. There are always figs ripening while others are growing. Every couple of days you can grab a few figs off of the tree. Stark Brothers says the tree is hardy in the Northern Illinois area. The trees can grow up to 25 ft tall. However, they say that in colder areas OR during colder winters the tree may die back to the crown of the plant. It is a good idea to insulate the crown each fall to give more protection during the winter. This is my first year so I will probably let it go as is and then see what happens in the spring. I am thinking about cutting the stalks down each spring anyway and letting the tree become a multi-branching bush each year. I'll post some more videos as the tree grows over the next couple of seasons. Also, figs are not known to have any problems with pests and supposedly deer do bother them.
