Taking the throne at the age of 16. A highly energetic but arrogant emperor, Justinian's reign started with great success but eventually he blundered into one disaster after another. His aspiration to be a second Justinian greatly out stripped the resources of the empire he ruled. The consequences of his strive for glory resulted in the overthrow of the Heraclian dynasty.
