Title: Nanomedicine: Solution to Mitigate HIV/AIDS Short description of the talk Currently, there is no cure and no preventive vaccine for HIV/AIDS. Combination antiretroviral therapy has played pivotal role in the reduction of HIV/AIDS-related morbidity and mortality, however, it has major side effects and is ineffective in patients in whom the virus develops resistance. Nanotechnology has been recognised as one of the most important scientific fields of the 21st century, using engineered structures of the nanometre-scale size range (1-100nm) to the benefit of mankind. Nanomedicine is the application of nanotechnology to the field of medicine, has demonstrated the potential to revolutionise modern medicine through advancing the treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS. Five nanotechnology-based strategies that have a potential to eliminate HIV in the reservoirs and/or prevent virus entry into the immune system cells, such include; i) “Nano-Antiretroviral” strategy, ii) “Shock and Kill” strategy, iii) “Block and Lock” strategy, iv) “Silence and Block” strategy and v) “Hijack and Block” strategy.
