A New Cosmology for AI Alignment - Julian Gough

This talk zooms very, very far out, and is largely non-mathematical. However, I think it adds value to the alignment conversation by installing an entirely new, and potentially helpful, conceptual infrastructure beneath that conversation. In cosmology, there have been some significant recent advances in a theory called cosmological natural selection. This improved version of the theory has had significant success in predicting what the James Webb Space Telescope would see in the early universe, and has far outperformed mainstream approaches. As such, it looks like it might actually be true. But if it is true, this has significant implications for AI alignment, because this cosmology predicts, as a normal developmental stage of an evolved and fine-tuned universe, a transition from biological-only intelligence to biological-plus-technological intelligence. (“Biology is the first half of the periodic table coming to life; technology is the second half of the periodic table coming to life.”) This is simply something universes do, and are fine-tuned to do. As such, there may be lessons we can learn from similar developmental transitions in the individual in the biological realm (where evolution has also fine-tuned those transitions), as well as from major evolutionary transitions such as that from single to multicellular life. This talk will outline the theory in the first half hour. The second half hour will be a general discussion exploring its implications.
