(Remove Painted Screws / Back Out Painted-Over Screws) Dealing with painted-over screws (or paint filled screws) is one of those hassles that DIYers and pro carpenters alike often have to face. This short video from The Honest Carpenter will show you an easy, quick method for tackling this problem--and it only involves 2 simple tools! Paint-filled screws make demo very difficult sometimes. But, resist the temptation to just try to tear them out! Screw threads hold very aggressively, and they won't be easy to rip out. Instead, focus on CLEANING THE PAINT OUT OF THE THE SCREW HEAD. This task doesn't take very long. And, once the screw heads are cleaned, they will be extremely easy to back out with a drill, an impact driver, or a screwdriver. TWO TOOLS NEEDED: 6-IN-1 SCREWDRIVER UTILITY KNIFE I use the 6-in-1 screwdriver to clean the layered paint off the head of the screw. I use the smaller flathead (standard) bit to do this. I just scrape the paint with the flat blade of the tool, forward and backwards. Old pain will crack off in chunks; newer paint will often peel off like a skin. When the paint has been peeled from the top, the screw slots will be revealed. Use the skinny tip of the screwdriver to carve and gouge the old paint out of the screw slots in a notching motion. Use a utility knife to then carve or pick out the remaining paint imbedded deep in the screw head. When the screw head is clean of paint, you'll be able to back it out! Just be sure to turn your drill or screwdriver VERY SLOWLY at first, until the screw begins to rotate. This will prevent you from camming out the screw head. Thanks for watching!
