In general, annual maintenance cut/thin for size, shape. Perform the following: 1. Remove any excess height & width by cutting stems at next joint (size down) 2. Remove excess branching by retaining only 1 or 2 branching per cluster (thin out) 3. Even out (shape) 4. Shake up (clean off dead leaves) This year I have better access to the plant after removal of a near by Bleeding Hearts. Thin & de-clutter can be done from the bottom. Much more efficient than previous year. Next year, when the lower shrubs get bigger, there may never be as good an access. Don not worry about making mistakes. Presonal preference rules. This takes well to pruning and always grows back if there were too much removed.
