They wouldn't show their reactions, they wouldn't really open up and tell us what they feel. But I wouldn't say they would grieve a lot because some - I can't say everyone - would have chosen to leave North Korea by one way or another. So as for grief, I wouldn't say too much. Maybe more the anxiety." 19. Low shot of people on High Street with Korean newspaper billboard in foreground STORYLINE: Koreans in London reacted with a mixture of fear and hope on Monday to the death of North Korea's leader Kim Jong-Il. The London suburb of New Malden is said to be home to some 8,000 Koreans, making it the largest Korean community in Europe. Flames leap from the stove in the kitchen of the Sorabol restaurant, as a chef fries up some noodles. Restaurant owner Jang Dong-Chun has been providing home cooking to the Koreans of New Malden for almost fifteen years. Originally from Seoul, Jang keeps a close eye on news from the North - and says the death of Kim Jong-Il could help to bring North Korea in from the cold. "Hopefully this could prove to be a turning point for the people of North Korea," says Jang, 49. "Hopefully there will now be an improvement in their economic and social situation." The main shopping street in New Malden reflects the strength of the Korean community here. Korean supermarkets, restaurants, travel agencies and property companies vie for space. Inside the Seoul Plaza supermarket, student Kim Do-Hee is shopping for kimchi, the pickled vegetable that's regarded as one of Korea's staple dishes. She's come to study in London while her family remains in South Korea, and has a sense of foreboding about what may happen as the North is plunged into a new era of instability. "I think it's quite dangerous, and I'll probably have to go back if something really bad happens," says Kim, aged 23. "My brother is in the army, so it's quite scary." The vast majority of New Malden's Korean community come from the South.
