Welcome back to The Green Yard and a video I've been waiting for put out since I started down the path of growing my own food more than four and a half year ago. We are finally harvesting our first official Ice Cream Banana (Blue Java) Bananas! Blue Java's are known as Ice Cream Bananas due to the texture of their flesh, which is soft and has the consistency of ice cream, as well as their flavor, which contains hints of vanilla. I have found that they have a blueish green color during certain times of growing, which is the reason why they are also known as Blue Java Bananas. Once they are ripe, they turn yellow just like any other banana. Their skin though is incredibly thin, almost paper thin, which means that the bananas bruise very easily. Bananas are a very easy to grow, well producing, plant here in the Phoenix area if you give them the environment they want. I have found that bananas need to be heavily mulched under at least eight inches, preferably over a foot, of wood chips and other organic material. This really helps them be able to retain moisture. They can survive both our winters and summers with ease, although during the winters they do not look very good. They also do not require as much water as rumored. I will typically water once every two weeks. With our record breaking heat this summer I did water them once every week, which seemed to help reduce any sunburn they received. If you have any questions please comment below. Also, if you would like to see a video on any of our other plants, please comment below and I will work on putting that out.
