It’s a question the community is tired of asking: When will New Mexico get serious about fixing its child welfare system? For decades, KRQE has shed light on the repeated failures of the state’s Children, Youth, & Families Department concerning the death of children. We have questioned leaders and brought viewers gut-wrenching interviews from caregivers who tried to save their loved ones from the state’s decisions. CYFD repeatedly letting down our state’s most vulnerable children spans at least four governors over three decades. It is a generational problem that’s persisted through Republican and Democratic leadership. In this KRQE News Special, we dig into how we got here, detail the broken promises from those in power to fix the system, and ask why one child’s death was not enough for New Mexico to get serious about fixing CYFD. Then, we look forward to what can and should change. In a roundtable discussion, you will hear from a panel of child advocates who have spent their careers supporting, working with, and fighting against CYFD. We do want to warn you that this is a heavy and truly upsetting topic. It might be too much for some, but we felt New Mexico can no longer ignore what is happening to those who cannot protect themselves.
