The spine consists of vertebrae stacked upon one another, forming a straight and neutral alignment. These vertebrae are separated by intervertebral discs, which provide cushioning or structure and act as a shock absorber between all the bones. The spine has three main sections: the cervical spine, thoracic spine, and lumbar spine. Scoliosis is when you develop an unnatural sideways curvature of the spine, with a rotational component and a Cobb angle measurement of 10 degrees or greater. A lumbar scoliosis is when this unnatural sideways curvature occurs in the lower back / lumbar spine. Lumbar scoliosis is most commonly associated with back pain and discomfort. It can also be the most progressive in the adult stage. Scoliosis is classified depending on the cause, location, patient age, and severity. Scoliosis is a complex problem that requires a customized treatment. Some common signs of lumbar scoliosis are uneven shoulders, uneven hips, arms not hanging symmetrically, pelvic tilt, low back pain, leg pain, sciatic pain, changes of gait and coordination balance, hip pain, or hip degeneration.
