A detailed investigation into the overwhelming body of archaeological evidence and commonsense arguments, which suggest that basic harmony and even polyphony were commonly used in music throughout the ancient world - contrary to the prevailing 'urban myth' of the monotony of monophony in ancient music: http://ancientlyre.com/the_urban_myth... To quote the early 20th century musicologist, Curt Sachs; the first musicologist to actually record and document the musical traditions of truly ancient aboriginal societies, which have never had any contact with Western civilization: "The deep-rooted prejudice that harmony and polyphony have been a prerogative of the medieval and modern West does not hold water. Not one of the continents, not one of the archipelagos between them lacks rudimentary forms of polyphony" In summary, this 'deep rooted prejudice' that harmony and polyphony were somehow magically 'invented' by Western composers during the Renaissance, seems to stem from a simple logical category mistake, of confusing the first CODIFICATION of the practice of harmony & polyphony (which we find in the "Musica Enchiriadis" Treaties of the late 9th century CE)...and the first CONCEPTION and practice of harmony & polyphony, which goes back to AS LONG AS PEOPLE HAVE BEEN SINGING! Indeed, since all humans, men, women and children, all have different voices in different registers, without the natural use of harmony to blend their voices together, societies would never have been able to effectively sing in social groups - in creating any sort of music throughout human history, harmony and polyphony have, and always will be, perfectly natural; it is indeed monophony, which is entirely unnatural.
