Presentation of the ICCROM-Sharjah's Grand Award for Good Practices 2023-2024 receiving project by Dr Hiba Alkhalaf. Managing Libya’s Cultural Heritage - Restoring Ghadames: Creation of the Visitor Centre (MaLiCH Project) marked Ghadames’s first major heritage initiative since its UNESCO “in danger” listing in 2016. It restored a partially collapsed mudbrick house in the Old Town and transformed it into a cultural hub celebrating both tangible and intangible heritage. The work included documenting the urban fabric using drones and photogrammetry, and recording traditional know-how such as building techniques, crafts, and the endangered Zanjafour wall-painting art—a women-led practice. Local women revived the tradition by creating new murals and mentoring others. The project became a community-led effort, with residents documenting heritage and traditional crafts, ensuring heritage remains active, inclusive, and locally rooted. Hiba Alkhalaf is a Syrian architect, researcher, and heritage specialist focused on post-conflict recovery, cultural resilience, and community-led conservation. Her work spans the MENA region and the UK, blending architectural conservation, traditional knowledge, and inclusive heritage practices. She has led award-winning projects, including the MaLiCH initiative in Libya, and works closely with local communities, especially women, to revive endangered crafts and document intangible heritage. Hiba is also active in archival research and capacity building, advocating for heritage as a tool for justice, memory, and sustainable futures. Read more: https://presentations.thebestinherita...
