Pascaline used to have difficulties in hearing her mother, friends, and teachers due to her hearing impairment. When the Government of Rwanda was able to provide her with affordable and high-quality hearing aids procured through the UNICEF Supply Catalogue, Pascaline’s world transformed. The video begins with a poignant flashback showing a glimpse of the moment she first tested her hearing aids. The narrative then progresses into a follow-up of Pascaline’s story, filmed one year later. We went to see how she is doing today, and ask her about the impact these simple devices have had on her life so far. SCRIPT: OST One year ago OST Last year, Pascaline tested out her hearing aids for the first time. Let’s see how this simple device has impacted her life OST Today Pascaline Uwababyeyi - Student “Before I received the hearing aids, I couldn’t play with other kids because I couldn’t hear what they were playing. But now, we can play together because I can hear.” Appoline Uwababyeyi – Pascaline’s Mother “The new thing I noticed is that she enjoys studying more than before. When she arrives in class, she can hear, whereas before, she could not and would be afraid to ask questions, saying, “If I ask, they will laugh at me.” But now, when the teacher explains something written on the blackboard, she hears and understands it, just like all the other students.” Pascaline Uwababyeyi - Student “The benefits I have gained from these hearing aids include being able to hear music, my friends, my teachers, my mother and even my little brother. This makes me happy. My dreams are to become a Minister. The Prime Minister.” OST UNICEF reduced the cost of hearing aids in Rwanda by 94 percent, from $2,000 down to $118, giving children access to affordable, high-quality devices. OST Increasing access to assistive technology empowers children like Pascaline to dream big.
