Here's one more tune from Jaco’s 1981 solo debut gig, which I recorded on a small cassette recorder from the audience. A quick note to my confident horn-playing friends: if you’re feeling good about your improv chops on a 12-bar blues shuffle, check out Michael Brecker’s solo on this. You might want to revise your confidence level ! Brecker goes first, promptly blows the doors off the place, and is then followed by Bob Mintzer, who smartly hangs on one or two notes as he plots his way forward. But like Breck, Bob's also a master, and his solo is a brilliant response to what had just taken place before he jumped in. The third solo is Jaco’s, and he’s intent on blowing in Hendrix-like fashion. My apologies for the lack of fidelity on this part, which resulted from a combination of my exhausted little cassette recorder and Jaco’s distortion dialed up to 11, but for those who weren’t there I can promise you it was freakin’ LOUD.
