…OK, I’ve seen a little bit of mention of AI in some online Permaculture discussions as if it were just another interesting tool for us to use. And I think this is an important moment to ask some real questions about what Permaculture is for and what’s at the heart of it. Permaculture is a movement rooted in care for the earth - meaning, the water, soil, air, plants, animals, and people. There is not a one of these that AI does not harm significantly. If I had to design the exact opposite of a Permaculture system, it might be an AI data center. AI's use of electricity and water, and the sheer materials cost and embodied energy of those data centers has just about nothing comparable in the history of our already way resource-intensive civilization. It’s hard to get away from AI 100% if you’re using the internet or apps at all (and I am, as thoughtfully as I can). Even so, I’d suggest that we try. Corporations are desperate to force-feed us the AI they spend billions on in every way they can so their shareholders don't get clued into the fact that it's not profitable nor a fraction as useful as the hype tells us. One of the resources I mention in this video is Ed Zitron, whose amazing rants have made the case better than I ever could about the financial illusion under this all. One persuasive piece of his writing about the financial illusion of this all can be found here: https://www.wheresyoured.at/how-to-ar... The magnitude of the AI bubble on a financial level may just be the thing that finally destroys the limping American economy. If that happens, and consumerism and waste go with it, is it a friend to Permaculture after all? Well… I don’t know. I’m going to go play with trees and I’m not going to use AI for Permaculture design.
