Keith an Dave visit Bransholme Castle. What remains of Bransholme Castle, a scheduled ancient monument, was our latest walk together. From Keith's home on the Bransholme Estate we took a walk along a disused railway track. The railway once went from Hull to Hornsea (and back again). Beeching closed this line. But the route has remained open to walkers and cyclists and is part of the Trans Pennine Trail. Along the way we took a look at two important drainage and flood alleviation ditches. We also discovered a rich source of fruit along the way to the castle. Apple cores and various varieties of plum stones were thrown out of carriage windows in the 100 years the line was operational. Those pips and stones have grown into mighty fine trees over the years. Bearing in mind that the remains of the 12th century castle are a protected monument. It belonged to Sir John de Sutton, his grave is inside Sutton Church. You may be surprised at the amount of damage there is on the site. Just because the site is alongside one of the biggest estates in Europe is no excuse for allowing vandalism on this scale. One of the reasons we went was to see it before it is totally destroyed. Keith uses his drone to see from the air just how damaged the site has become. #EastYorkshire #castle #ancientmonuments #oldrailway #drone Follow us: @oldiesoutdoors
