This is my second visit to Elk Lakes provincial park, but my first trip up to the Paetain Basin. On this adventure I'm joined by fellow YouTuber and hiker, @Wandering Panda. The 600 m vertical wall leading to the basin is the hardest climb I have ever done in the Rockies. We laced our boots and drove to the trail head near Kananaskis Lake in Peter Lougheed Park. Our ultimate destination is the magnificent Petain Falls. Mount Pétain is located on the border of Alberta and British Columbia on the Continental Divide. It was named in 1918 after Marshal Philippe Pétain - at the time an honored war hero by Canadians as well as by other World War I allies. The name was retained despite the later reversal in Pétain's reputation after his having been Head of State of Vichy France. We stayed overnight at a decommissioned campground just west of the Upper Elk Lake. The next morning we hiked to the falls and into the basin. We spent night 2 at Lower Elk lake before heading back home. Here is a link to my map of this trip on CalTopo: https://caltopo.com/m/4MQ5 Cheers from Alberta. ------------------------------ #PetainFalls #ElkLakes #Backpacking 0:00 Intro 0:45 Alberta / British Columbia border 1:47 Fox Lake 5:16 First view of Upper Elk Lake 6:48 Decommissioned campground on Petain Creek 13:30 Climbing the headwall to Petain Basin (600 m vertical) 17:27 Upper Petain Falls & Basin 35:35 Lower Elk Lake
