Wind Cave National Park protects two very different worlds - one deep within the earth, the other a sunlit world of many resources. Beneath the prairie is one of the world’s longest and most complex caves, full of frostwork, flowstone, and popcorn formations. The cave is also abundant with boxwork, a formation rarely found elsewhere. Bison, elk, and other wildlife roam the rolling prairie grasslands and forested hillsides of one of America's oldest national parks. Wind Cave gained national attention due to an adventurous teenager named Alvin McDonald. He began exploring the cave, carrying a candle and a ball of strings.
