Naseeruddin Shah and Shivendra Singh Dungarpur speak to Anupama Chopra about their film Manthan (1976), which was shown at the 77th Cannes film Festival as part of Cannes Classics. Directed by Shyam Benegal, the film was crowd-funded by 500,000 farmers from the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Federation, each contributing two rupees. Shah reflected on Manthan’s unexpected success and the experience of presenting it to a non-Indian audience. Dungarpur speaks passionately about the work of the Film Heritage Foundation and their efforts to preserve and restore Indian films. Shah hopes that the Cannes screening of Manthan and its re-release in India spawns a generation of people who care about the preservation of important cinema. #FCAtCannes in Association with: Entertainment Partner: Airtel Xstream Fiber (#AirtelXstreamIndia) Beauty Partner: Lakme Podcast Partner: @AmazonMusicIN Travel Partner: Air France 00:00 - At Cannes'24 with Naseeruddin Shah and Shivendra Singh Dungarpur 01:14 - The most enduring memory of the premier 04:22 - Manthan being crowdsourced by 5,00,000 farmers 04:50 - Naseeruddin Shah’s then conversation with Shyam Benegal 06:10 - The talks happening on set, and how Manthan was made 08:30 - Resurrecting the film 11:50 - The day Shivendra took this decision 13:25 - Idealism existing when this film was made 17:39 - Leaving its viewer with hope 21:38 - Manthan coming back to theatres Have you subscribed to Film Companion yet?
