The day after burying his brother George Floyd, Philonise Floyd urged lawmakers to “make law enforcement the solution and not the problem.” At a hearing before the House Judiciary Committee, which also included police chiefs, civil rights activists and legal experts on policing practices and accountability, Philonise Floyd remembered his brother as a “gentle giant” who made sacrifices for his family and complete strangers alike. A former police officer has been charged with murder for kneeling on George Floyd's neck for several minutes before Floyd died. Philonise Floyd said George “didn’t deserve to die over $20,” referencing a shop owner's call to police over a potentially counterfeit bill that ended in the fatal encounter. “Is that what a black man is worth?” Philonise Floyd asked. He urged lawmakers to hold officers accountable and encourage the use of lethal force only when necessary -- changes he said would make George “more than another face on a T-shirt” or “another name” on a list of black Americans killed by police. “George called for help and he was ignored -- please listen to the call i’m making to you now,” he said.
