Tom Langley was born in Chasetown, Staffordshire, though his family originally came from the Black Country, they moved to the Cannock Chase coalfield looking for work. His mother worked at the Burntwood asylum. Towards the end of his life he worked as a Security Officer after a career of twenty-five years spent with the Birmingham City Police Force. Though Tom was also a member of the Black Country Society and enjoyed telling people stories of the region. He even wrote a book published by the society on William Perry the 'Tipton Slasher'. Show Guide: 00:00 - Episode 1: 'Alf Jed Ayli 15:40 - Episode 2: Tommy Treacle and Old Judge Kettle This recording is a combination of two radio shows which have been combined back to back. In them Tom relates many stories of his Youth in the Black Country, while they are likely based on truth it seems they have been altered to be more entertaining as well as to protect the identities of real individuals, using the names of the Black Country parochial characters 'Aynuk' and 'Ayli' in their place in many instances. It is not clear but it is believed these shows would have aired in the early 70's, if so these are now public domain, no listing for the show can be found however to prove this either way. The gentleman heard singing in the first program is believed to be Roy Palmer, a gentleman who devoted his career to the collection and study of English Folk Music. Both of these recordings make up part of the Roy Palmer collection which is held at the British Library. Tom's Book on the Tipton Slasher can still be purchased through the Black Country Society. All sales help them continue their work of preserving Black Country History and Culture. https://www.blackcountrysociety.com/p...
