Driving a 1953 Ford F100 with a rebuilt Flathead V8 is like stepping back into pure American truck history 🚘 In this video, we take this classic Ford pickup out on the road and show you exactly what it’s like behind the wheel of one of the last Flathead-powered F-Series trucks ever built. This 1953 Ford pickup is powered by a 272 cubic inch Flathead V8 producing approximately 137 horsepower. The engine has been completely rebuilt by Sperry Engines in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and the results speak for themselves. Smooth idle, strong pull, and that unmistakable vintage Ford sound. The Flathead V8 first debuted in 1932 and became a legend in hot rod and truck culture. It was offered in Ford F-Series pickups starting in 1948 and 1953 marked the final year of the Flathead V8 in F-Series trucks. That makes this truck part of the closing chapter of an iconic engine era. In this video you’ll see: • Full test drive of a 1953 Ford F100 Flathead V8 • Manual transmission shifting through the gears • Four-wheel drum brakes and manual steering in action • Overdrive setup (non-functional but still installed) • What 40 mph feels like in a 70+ year old truck • Behind-the-scenes look at the full engine rebuild What started as a simple oil leak repair turned into a complete teardown. The engine, transmission, and rear end were leaking from nearly every gasket and seal. Once opened up, the engine revealed a mix of Mercury and Ford pistons, requiring a full rebuild. The machine shop hot-tanked the block, discovered cracks, sourced a replacement block, resized connecting rods, installed a reconditioned crankshaft, new valve guides, new seats, and fresh pistons. What began as a minor fix became a full restoration of the heart of this classic Ford truck. This truck still retains much of its original character. It features: • Flathead V8 • Manual transmission • Manual brakes • Manual steering • Four-wheel drum brakes • Mostly original wiring in places • Modern radio added by the owner No power steering. No power brakes. No digital screens. Just steel, gears, and gasoline. If you love classic Ford trucks, Flathead V8 engines, vintage pickups, or engine rebuild projects, this one’s for you.
