Are you concerned about chemicals in plastic containers? Bisphenol A, or BPA, is a chemical used in hard plastic food and drink containers such as the lining of canned foods, food storage containers and water bottles. The BPA from the container can be transferred to your food or drinks. Christy Brissette, Registered Dietitian at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre’s ELLICSR Kitchen, shows you how to limit your exposure to BPA and other chemicals in plastic containers. Christy’s tips include: Storing Store food in glass, stainless steel or ceramic containers. Use plastic containers that are labelled “BPA free” or have a 5, 4 or 2 on the bottom. Use canned foods less often or look for “BPA free” on the label. Choose frozen foods more often than canned. Heating, Freezing and Washing Avoid heating or freezing plastic containers, even if they’re BPA free. Wash plastic containers by hand. Check the bottom of container to see if it is microwave safe, dishwasher safe and freezer safe.
