(15 Jun 1995) English/Nat France and the US are at loggerheads over the French decision to resume nuclear testing in the south Pacific. French President Jacques Chirac, who's been meeting President Clinton in Washington, is flatly refusing to reconsider the move. Clinton responded by saying that the US will continue to press France to stop the planned tests - which have attracted widespread international condemnation. But the two leaders did agree on Bosnia. French President Jacques Chirac arrived at the White House on Wednesday amidst a grounds well of international criticism. Chirac's announcement that his government would resume nuclear testing is drawing fire from around the world. The issue was at the forefront as Chirac made his first visit to Washington since being elected to the French presidency. Both leaders were all smiles during the day long meetings, which covered other issues including Bosnia and Iran. But outside the White House, protesters were making sure that the French President heard their voices on the nuclear testing issue. A day of meetings at the White House, culminated with a public appearance with President Clinton and European Commission head Jacques Santer. President Chirac showed his appreciation to the US leader by speaking in his host's language. SOUNDBITE: "Mr. President, 40-years ago, when I was working as a soda jerk in a Howard Johnson restaurant, I didn't think that one day I would be in the White House beside the President of the United States for a press conference. And I appreciate it very much. It's rather moving." SUPER CAPTION: Jacques Chirac, French President Despite the apparent cordiality, Chirac and Clinton were sticking to their positions on the resumption of French nuclear testing. SOUNDBITE: (Voice of English Translator) "No, I am not all willing to go back on the decision that I have taken." SUPER CAPTION: Jacques Chirac SOUNDBITE: "We regret the decision and we have worked hard to, to,try and stop the test as a way of setting up a greater willingness to have a comprehensive test ban treaty." SUPER CAPTION: Bill Clinton, United States President However they did agree over Bosnia. SOUNDBITE: "I never said that the United states had to take a tougher stand on Bosnia. I never even mentioned the idea that they ought to send ground troops. We have a convergent strategy for the time being and I fully support the American stance. I hope that this time my point has been made understood." SUPER CAPTION:Jacques Chirac, French President The two will be joining the other G-7 leaders at a summit meeting at Halifax in Canada which begins on Thursday.
