Construction and Inspiration (Late 18th Century) : The gate was built between 1788 and 1791 during the reign of King Frederick William II of Prussia. It was designed by architect Carl Gotthard Langhans and modeled after the gateways of ancient Athens, specifically the Propylaea. It symbolized peace and was originally part of the city’s customs wall. Atop the gate is a sculpture called the Quadriga, showing a chariot pulled by four horses, driven by a goddess of victory. 2. Symbol of Power and War (19th Century) : In 1806, after Napoleon defeated Prussia, he took the Quadriga statue to Paris as a trophy. However, when Napoleon was defeated in 1814, the Prussians brought it back to Berlin, turning the gate into a symbol of victory and national pride. 3. Division and Reunification (20th Century) : • World War II : The Brandenburg Gate was damaged during the war but survived the bombings. • Cold War : After the war, Berlin was divided into East and West. The Brandenburg Gate stood in East Berlin, near the infamous Berlin Wall that separated the two sides. It became a symbol of division between East and West Germany. • Fall of the Wall (1989) : When the Berlin Wall fell, the Brandenburg Gate became a symbol of German reunification and freedom. 4. Today (21st Century) : Now fully restored, the Brandenburg Gate is a major tourist attraction and a symbol of peace, unity, and history. It hosts celebrations, political events, and cultural activities.
